The golden rope, once the sash of Lord Lao, binds whoever its incantation commands. The gold-horn demon uses it to capture Zhu Bajie and Sun Wukong in turn, until Wukong learns the spell by a trick and turns the rope back on its owner. A belt that can tie up heaven’s own heroes is the novel’s joke about power in small things.
