Chang'e
Heng'e · Goddess of the Moon
The moon goddess who drank the elixir of immortality and flew to the lunar palace, forever gazing at the world she left behind.
The tale of Chang'e is one of China's most beloved. Huainanzi records: "Yi obtained the elixir of immortality from the Queen Mother of the West; Heng'e stole it and fled to the moon." She drifted up, cradling the jade rabbit, to dwell in the cold Guanghan Palace — the eternal emblem of longing in the Mid-Autumn Festival.
