Sha Wujing was the Curtain-Lifting General of heaven until he shattered the crystal cup at a celestial banquet and was banished to the Flowing Sands River as a man-eating ogre. Guanyin converted him to the pilgrim’s cause, and he joined the journey as the quietest of the disciples, carrying the luggage and speaking seldom. His reward was the rank of Golden Body Arhat — a heaven won by patience rather than spectacle.
