Chi is the hornless dragon of Chinese tradition, sometimes pictured as a young dragon or a water dragon. From the Han dynasty onward the curling chi-dragon motif spread across jades, bronzes and roof ridges, its twisting body promising ascent and good fortune — a dragon stripped of horns but never of power.
