Chimei and Wangliang are the collective demons of the wilds: Chi the mountain spirit, Mei the spirit of old things, and Wangliang the water ghost. In the Zuo Zhuan they appear as the creatures that once dwelt in the ancient states’ marshes, and the phrase has survived as shorthand for every kind of hidden evil — the monsters that wear the shapes of men.
