The lying beast of the southwestern wilderness, recorded in the Divine Classic of the Marvels, has a rabbit’s shape and a human face that speaks only deceit; eating its flesh was said to make even honest people lie. It is the earliest mythic ancestor of the rumor — a creature that lives by falsehood and poisons all who taste it.
