Hundun

Primordial Chaos

Both the faceless bird-god Dijiang and the Central Emperor of chaos in Zhuangzi, symbol of primordial unity.

Hundun names both a divine bird and the primal chaos itself. In the Shanhaijing the god Dijiang of Mount Tian is a faceless yellow sack with six legs and four wings who loves song and dance; in the Zhuangzi, the Emperor of the Center is Chaos, whose friends bore seven openings into him — and on the seventh day he died. Together they symbolize the undifferentiated origin of all things.
