The Kaiming Beast guards the southern abyss of Mount Kunlun, huge as a tiger with nine human faces all turned eastward toward the sun. It stands at the gate of the Queen Mother of the West’s realm, a sentinel of the world’s axis whose nine heads watch every direction at once.
