The luan bird of Nüchuang Mountain in the Shanhaijing is pheasant-like with five-colored markings, and its appearance brings peace to the world. Paired with the phoenix as an emblem of good omen, the luan later became the green bird messenger of the Queen Mother of the West, carrying letters between the world of men and the realm of the immortals.
