Zheng is a beast of Zhang’e Mountain in the western Shanhaijing, a crimson leopard with five tails and a single horn whose cry sounds like stones struck together. With its burning color and rocky voice it belongs to the jagged mountain world of the western canon, a guardian beast of a land without trees but rich in jade.
