The Legend of the White Snake tells of Bai Suzhen, a serpent who cultivated for a thousand years and took human form to repay the kindness of the scholar Xu Xian. Their marriage is broken by the monk Fahai, who sees the union of human and demon as an offence against heaven. After the flooding of Jinshan Temple, Bai Suzhen is sealed beneath Leifeng Pagoda, and only her son’s filial devotion finally frees her.
