Bathing the Moon

Changxi, wife of Dijun, bore the twelve moons and bathed them in the Sweet Spring.

According to the Shanhaijing, the goddess Changxi, wife of the high god Dijun, gave birth to the twelve moons and first bathed them in the Sweet Spring at the western edge of the world. Just as Xihe drives the sun each day, Changxi brings the moon through its monthly cycle. The passage turns the calendar itself into family story — the twelve months are her twelve children.
