The Giant Who Thirsted

The giant Kuafu pursues the sun, dies of thirst, and his staff becomes a peach grove.

Kuafu the giant resolved to overtake the sun. He ran to Yugu, where the sun goes down, but the heat parched him; he drained the Yellow River and the Wei River, and still thirsty set out north for the Great Lake, dying of thirst on the way. His discarded staff grew into the Deng grove of peach trees, shading later travelers — a portrait, with Jingwei, of striving against the impossible.
